The story and tools of how an IT department in a fast scaling biotech created a common culture in three countries, priming the DevOps journey ahead.

In 2019 the IT organization started growing quickly as the biotech company reached phase 3 clinical stage. We started hiring people rapidly but found that per each new person we had diminishing returns in productivity. We realized that we had to re-think how we build our organization to keep up with the technological demands of the complex business we were in. The first step was to create a common understanding of our culture - a set of rules for how we behave towards each other. To do that we initiated games called Culture Quests. After a year of working with our culture, we changed our structure to support DevOps teams. This transition was helped along the way by the commonly adopted set of cultural principles.
